HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT HELMET SIZE

In order for a helmet to fit correctly and offer adequate protection, it’s vital you choose the right helmet size: learn with us how.

When looking for the right helmet there are several factors you should consider: first of all, the model should be adequate to the usage and the situation in which you will be riding your bike; for example, an open face helmet for short daily commutes has different characteristics and features from a helmet you plan to use to do many miles; secondly, you must choose the right size for a correct fit and then you can choose the best graphic color that reflects your taste and personality.

Comfort is essential especially if you are wearing your helmet for long ride, that’s why it is important to ensure that your new helmet fits properly and therefore protects you in the event of an impact.  Choosing the right helmet doesn’t have to be a daunting task with our guide to walk you through it.

How to measure the circumference of your head for the right helmet size

Since each helmet size corresponds to a certain head circumference, the first thing to do is to measure the circumference of your head (measure in cm)

In order to measure the head circumference, you need:

  • A soft tailor tape measure
  • To measure the circumference of your head, the tape should run above your eyebrows and around the back of your head, including the widest part just an inch above your ears.

Compare your result against the helmet’s sizing chart here below to determine which size suits you best

(Attention! The below sizing correspondence may vary slightly depending on the helmet model selected; it’s therefore important to always first check with the manufacture’s specific model size chart on their website and try out the actual helmet product in the shop before purchasing)

HELMET SIZE HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE IN CM
XS 53/54
S 55/56
M 57/58
L 59/60
XL 61/62
XXL 63/64

Try a helmet on prior to purchase

Since knowing the head circumference may not be enough to be sure of the right helmet fit, we suggest you before buying it to first try on the helmet and wear it for about half an hour with the chin strap fastened. As with shoes, the fit can vary depending also on the shape of the head, so be sure to try some out while at the store to make sure that the helmet fits your head shape properly, even if it is listed as being the right size. A proper fit shouldn’t cause any pain or pressure points. For flip-up models, we suggest you to try it on both with the chin guard closed and open.

Getting the right size to ensure safety and comfort

With the helmet on, it’s important to check if you feel any discomfort, pressure points, and or if the helmet feels too loose or too tight. Please keep in mind that most helmet liners break in a bit after some hours of riding.

The helmet shouldn’t wobble around when you move your head, because in that case it won’t ensure adequate protection in case of impacts; therefore, try to shake your head to the sides and with your hand push it up and down to check if it’s too loose.

A motorcycle helmet should fit snug properly without minimal play when firmly twisting the helmet from side to side, and up and down! You shouldn’t feel pain directly at the forehead, or just above the temples. In case you are used to wear a balaclava under the helmet when riding, make sure to wear it also trying on the new helmet fit.
